If you are in trouble with credit or debt, don’t ignore the problem. Know what the warning signs are and ask for help before it becomes even more serious. It is important to keep in contact with your creditors. Do not ignore calls and letters; you will not be in a strong position later to negotiate lower payments or lower interest.
- Are you making late payments?
- Are you using your student loans to pay off credit card debt?
- Are you receiving calls and letters from credit card companies?
- Do you know what your total credit card debt is?
- Have you dropped courses in order to work more hours to pay off debt?
Now is the time to Take Charge of Your Credit! Find out what your total credit card balance is? Make note of the APR or Annual Percentage Rate. How much extra are you paying to borrow this money? Add it up! Stop using your credit cards until they are paid off. Then make sure to pay them off each month.
A bad credit rating can have serious negative consequences in the future. If you cannot make your payments, call the creditor immediately and work together to come up with a repayment plan you can afford.
The UNH Cooperative Extension publication When Your Bills Pile Up will help you to pull together information on your debts, interest rates and monthly payments. There is also information on contacting creditors.
